Now it's the Ex NYBS and GBL O5 Suburban turn to get repainted. 5897 is now in blue as of this morning as it was running the QM18 line. No pic of the bus as I was on the X68 and I was on the other side of the bus(Driver Side)

Nice Photo, I noticed they stopped the LED upgrades for some reason. It would have been cool if they replaced the route signs to those orange ones.

It's possible that bus may have the Mega Max 3000 signs in them.  These are the ones with the green LEDs next to the flip dots. Those signs are too new to be upgraded or replaced.  When they are in good working order they look very nice.

I like those Ex NYBS/GBL O5 Suburbans. They are very nice buses and a type of bus I would suggest to ride on. The Red/Blue seats look best on a Orion then a Classic. Too bad there is only 4 of these buses and these buses are the MTA Bus version of the New Flyer D45S at NYCT!

Me personally I wish that MTA could've bought those instead of those monsters that roam the streets.  Shoot, for the price of one D4500 you could get two Orion suburbans.  Would anyone agree with me on that?  Besides I feel that bus (Orion) is more conducive for the environment that we work in.  I usually take one everyday and pass up that cruiser.

I notice that many driver's rather take a cruiser over a O5 is because those D4500CL's move great and make turns with ease.
I do agree that the D4500's where not really ment for some of the express routes but it does a pretty good job on the busy express lines where you carry about 50-55 people.
And what type of O5 CNG you like better? The 700's or the 7200's?

I like a mixture of the two batches.  As long as the bus runs great I'm all for it.  Here are my favorites so far:

709, 744, 7219, 7223, and 7226.  There were others that I driven but those were total dogs and done nothing for me.

It's true the cruisers can carry more people, have the pickup that an Orion lacks. But the runs I've been given don't carry like that so a bus that size isn't necessary.  Beside I move faster with the Orion in city traffic perfect example yesterday Madsion Ave was closed to buses all day.  We had to use 3rd Avenue and even though it was gridlocked, I managed to wiggle my way uptown.  I saw a cruiser from Yonkers stuck for about 20mins at 34th street.  I went passed him and dropped a customer and kept moving.  And a back door is must if you want to keep schedule in the outer boros in the city.  I like that as oppose to having somebody walk all the way from the back of the bus to the front to exit.

The people don't like it when they see an Orion pull up to the bus stop.  They complain that the ride is bouncy (that I like), it rides too hard on the streets and the new classic:  It's the old bus now.  But I could careless.  I'm the one operating it for 8 or 10 hours.  Beside driver wise the Orion is more comfortable to operate because of the leg room and steering wheel adjustment as oppose to that cruiser where your up against the wheel and you can't flatten it out the way you want.

I can do without that.  D4500 climate control sucks.  Everything is automatic and you have to depend on the temperature outside to work the climate inside the bus.  If the bus is too cold I'll flick the switch or vice versa.

It's interesting to see a real Orion Suburban (no rear exit door) in MTA Livery.  I was not aware that there were any such buses in the system.  How many are there and what operator had them before the takeover?

There are only three.  They were orignally operated by New York Bus Service and then transferred over to Green Bus Lines a number of years ago, where they were operating till the takeover, and still are.

Those are 05.501s, however...the 05.501 is the Orion V that is 40' 102", and those buses are just that, even if with only one door.

IMO, would it cost too much to give these buses a second door, because these buses would do well to fill the shortage.

Ya know, I never saw GBL #723, in person nor in a pic...  I had always thought it was #720-722.  Perhaps due to that #723 was at the Rockway Depot for the Rockaway expresses?  While the first three were at JFK for the QM18 runs?  Hmph..

I was trying to get a O5 Suburban on the QM18 this evening on the 4:25 or 4:45 and it was all D4500CL's.
If anybody interested getting a ride on one, they only on the QM18 now. Your best bet is in the morning between 7-9 AM and I know 2 of them leaves the 1st stop at 7:30(5897) and 7:45(5895 or 5896).
In the afternoon, only the 5:05 from 34th/3rd has a very high change of one because that b/o would mainly pull out 5896(He used to do the 2:30 and 5:15 out of 34th/3rd before the Spring Pick of this year). Maybe the 5:25 out of 34th/3rd but I am not 100% on this.

1999 Orion 05.501 (2): 5894, 5897
Enjoy!
Ray
Ray,it is 05.503 not 05.501.Please note that.
-Thanks
Those are 05.501s, however...the 05.501 is the Orion V that is 40' 102", and those buses are just that, even if with only one door.
IMO, would it cost too much to give these buses a second door, because these buses would do well to fill the shortage.

Let's go over the Orion V bus model numbers:
Model...Length...Width
05.501......40'......102"
05.502......40'...... 96"
05.503......35'...... 96"
05.504......35'......102"
05.505......30'...... 96"
05.506......30'......102" (None actually built)

The 05.502 also was never built either.

The 05.502 did built, but limited release only to Canada.

The 2:55PM run is also the last run out of Manhattan at 5:45PM, that B/O always had the Orion V Suburban.  But, after the Cruisers took over, he always had the Cruisers for the first first weeks.  Then the Orions made more afternoon trips thereafter, but since last week, now it's the cruisers again and no Orions I've noticed (these are the 2:55, 3:55 and 4:25 trips).

But, like you said, it seems they keep the morning runs/trips with the Orion V's and the afternoon runs/trips are almost exclusively cruisers.

Perhaps they're moving the Orion V's to the QM23?

There might be a slowdown, but there is also a former GBL O5 at Eastchester right now totally scraped down and awaiting repaint.

That's a shame, do you know the number? Also I've been seeing 5975 on the Q35 a lot these past few weeks. I still hope they don't have to retape-repaint all the buses and just let them be.

Every bus will be repainted or retired.
Its just a matter of time. (I rather doubt anything will not be in blue and white in a years time)

As you all know by now 9934, 9935 and 9937 were the 3 buses which had the blue tape pasted directly over the orange line of QSC as you can see the Orange stripe underneath it. However tonight on the Q25 I saw 9935 fully repainted, I didn't notice the back but the blue line looks like the triboro repaints. The front is the same as all the other buses now as before it was exactly like the QSC stripe except blue, it really looked good. I'm going to look for 34 and 37 to see if they also have been repainted. Sorry, no photos.

I thought those three buses mentioned were already the only buses that were actually repainted out of CPD's Orion V CNG fleet...?  Unless I'm thinking of #9936.

9939 was repainted. 9934, 35 and 37 had the orange stripes still on the bus when they covered them up with the blue stripe. They were the buses that on the front was not a straight line rather the QSC design. Also, I believe the bus at Eastchester is 5942 and 5954 is at JFK getting stripped of it's paint.

Speaking of #9935, I had just seen that same bus on the Q25/34 earlier this evening also.  IIRC, not sure though, I believe it also had LED destination signs, unless it was the bus that was tailing it.  I had thought #9935 was a repaint too, had the same dark blue stripe and the rear of the bus was a clean, glossy white (just as the repainted ex-TCC Orion V CNG's are also).  But, I did see the bus during twilight.

It seems odd that 5942 would be taken up all the way there, considering JFK has a paint shop...or does it? (However, I can see it also, probably to speed up repainting of the fleet.)

BUMP:

Today, I spotted 5987 repainted by Union Turnpike/Kew Gardens on the Q37 line.

Also, 5951 is now fully wrapped, wearing a wrap for JBL headphones.
